What Vampire Diaries has Taught Me

I’ve started rewatching Vampire Diaries on HBO. This show is a blast from the past. It also definitely feels like one. From the clothes to the cheesy writing, consider me obsessed.

I remember been a teenager and reading this book series, and then being over the moon when I heard they were turning this vampire novel into a vampire flick. I remember sitting in front of my television, glued to the screen, as teen supernatural beings balanced traditional teen drama and end of the world bad guys.

Who else read these books? I loved them!

Rewatching it as a 34 year old, I find myself scoffing about some of the tongue and cheek jokes. The writing feels like a relic of its time with the out dated “damsel in distress” turns “supernatural baddie” storyline. But then it hit me- why am I hating? I’m rolling my eyes at something that brought me so much joy as a teenager. Little Gigi would be so hurt knowing that some random 30-something was making fun of her taste in show.

So what has this show taught me? It has taught me that it’s okay to enjoy simpler things. Not everything has to have the deepest writing or heavy themes. Sometimes it’s okay to just enjoy a “will they won’t they” storyline between vampires and werewolves.

Do they even make shows like this anymore? What are the teens sinking their teeth into nowadays? These teen dramas are a canon event in growing up, and I hope they are still alive and well!

Could they have chose a more beautiful group of people for this show?!
